Safe passage

Image
Harbour Pilot’ s presence is essential  to ensure  the vessel’s safe and efficient passage in and out of a port and avoid the danger of collision, contact or running aground, which may cause serious incidents and harm the environment. Safe pilotage requires the effective co-ordination between Harbour Pilot, Master and the other members of the Bridge team. They should discuss and agree about the passage plan, before the passage begins. Lack of communication and/or inadequate Harbor Pilot’s knowledge may lead to the reduction of safety of navigation. In November of 2016, a bulk carrier run aground and remained stranded in the entrance of El Dekheila channel in Egypt. At the time of the incident, two Harbour Pilots were onboard. The safety investigation revealed that the course recommended by the Pilot was different from the one prepared in the passage planning. This incident reveals the necessity of good communication between Harbour Pilot and vessel’s crew and the complet...

Does A Pilot need a Helmet?

Image
Does a pilot need to wear a helmet? The most critical part of a harbour pilot’s job is being  transferred from the pilot boat to the ship and vice versa. Many accident cases occurred  involving pilots falling from the pilot ladder either on the pilot boat or into the water with regard to various factors such as weather, ship's motion, failure of the pilot'  s ladder, human error etc. Thus, the pilot’s personal protective equipment is merely important in order to avoid any severe injury should any unforeseen circumstance occur.  Even though we still see pilots wearing what could be described as their Sunday's best on most of the reputable pilot organizations as it is mandatory now where at least an automatically inflatable lifejacket which incorporates all the SOLAS requirements for lifejackets. Safety shoes or boots and non-slippery gloves are usually also standard equipment used by the prudent pilot, even unnecessarily required. All these are merely important ...

Pilot Ladder Arrangement

Image
A pilot ladder should be certified by the manufacturer as complying with SOLAS,  Chapter V/Reg.   23 or ISO 799:2004 . The steps of the ladders should be made of hardwood, in one piece and non slippery. The steps should not be less than 115 mm wide, 25 mm in depth and should be not less than 400 mm between the side ropes. Pilot boarding arrangements generally consists of  a pilot ladder and in case of excessive freeboard (greater than 9 m), a combination ladder (a combination of the pilot ladder and accommodation ladder) . The pilot normally boards on the lee side of the ship.

Bapa mencuri masa lelapkan mata seketika. Aku menongkatkan muka sambil melamun jauh ditelan kegelapan. Sesekali feri melepasi kapal dagang berlabuh ditepian laluan.  Terasa cepat masa berlari ketika pintu dibuka lagi.

It is a part of the job

10th October 2019....still remember the date and the passenger ship by the name of Hamilton which was supposed to be boarded at Pilot Station @ 0600hrs but was delayed 1/2 hours due to very heavy pours with zero visibility and soaked while piloting the outboard deep draft container vessel. Apologize for the delay due to the bad weather but was welcomed with angered reaction by the Master in front of his bridge crews who claimed to be drifted for almost 2 hours unaware of the pilot boarding time. Once anchored and about to sign the paper, he uttered the word 'sorry' for his behaviour but  ' keep it to yourself, Captain' came out from the mouth of the soaked and exhausted person who had tried the best to serve.

When my journey ends

Ibuku Jutawan

Bab 1 'Bangun!!!!!' suara tinggi Mira memecahkan rangkaian mimpi Aizul.  Terkebil - kebil matanya melihat  kelibat Mira kesana - sini sambil mulutnya bersumpah serana. ' Apalah punya jantan......tak berguna satu sen pun....menyusahkan hidup aku betui!!!!' Aizul terduduk senyap. Pelayaran melalui kawasan sejuk Kutub Utara

Pelayaran melalui kawasan sejuk Kutub Utara Aku memperbetulkan kedudukan sambil menarik - narik kolar baju agak kepanasan terwap keluar. Cuaca agak terik dengan silauan mentari memanah tajam ke tanah sehingga terpecah pantulan cahayanya. Sekali sekala kedengaran kereta menderum berlalu. Kicauan beburung  sayup kedengaran mengalun irama ketenangan. Wajahnya tenang sambil jari jemarinya pantas menyediakan rokok kertas gulung. Sekali sekala beliau  menggaru kepalanya yang dipenuhi rambut keputihan. Aku merenunginya.

Evening disembarking from MV Danum 160

Hurtwood House

Image
In the middle of reorganizing the album where came across with the long photo where it recalls all the memories during the times.
Jam berdetik tepat pukul 1.25 pagi ketika aku melabuhkan diri diatas kerusi bot setelah menyelesaikan tugasan rutinku. Serang bot terus memecut laju membelah lautan sambil dihempas manja dek pukulan angin daratan menghala ke arah pelabuhan. Sibulan tersipu malu berselindung dibalik awan kehitaman. Sinaran sang bintang - bintang di dada langit hilang entah kemana. 'Semacam saja cuaca malam nie..kapt....cam nak hujan lebat nampak...' Halim bersuara sambil tangan tangkas melayani stering bot. Suasana sunyi diselubungi hembusan angin sejuk membuatkan bulu roma tegak mencari kehangatan. Aku menyelusuri jalan besar setelah keluar dari kawas...

Inginku nikmati keindahan bulan dan bintang

Itu keinginanku dikala alam persekolahan. Kekadang aku bersendirian diluar halaman rumah dikala hening malam sambil mata memandang sinaran taburan bintang dilangit. Jauh fikiran melayang. Terasa ketenangan bersarang dihati. Maka aku mula merancang sendirian. Pengaruh filem barat dan komik mula menular difikiran. Baju, kain pelikat, kasut bot stail 'John travolta' dan topeng aku kenakan. Seolah2  berkemampuan untuk terbang ke angkasa umpama 'Superman'. Namun aku tetap ditanah. Pelbagai cara aku usahakan agar diri terbang melayang.

Penang Pilot boat proceeds in bad weather

Do harbour Pilots being appreciated?

Would you believe that a huge portion of that business profit wouldn't come to fruition if it weren't for a small group of harbor pilots that perform potentially dangerous activities each day? Very few people know about the harbor pilot business. The risks they take are at times remarkable. Responsible for helping to guide ships into the port, a boat will take a pilot out about six to seven miles offshore to meet a ship that he wishes to board. From there, the boat will pull the boat alongside of the boat, where the pilot will jump on a rope ladder that's been deployed by the incoming ship at which point the pilot must climb up the side of the ship. They'll then go to the bridge of the ship where they assess the situation and navigate the boat in, if conditions are met. It is as risky as it sounds. It can be very dangerous and some pilots have lost their lives during that transfer. When think about it, the ship is rolling and you are on the pilot boat is not rolli...
